Why would white patchy areas come to the surface after staining a piece of unfinished furniture?

Question by SusanS, Incognito: Why would white patchy areas come to the surface after staining a piece of unfinished furniture?
About two years ago I bought a pie safe in an unfinished furniture store. I presume the wood is pine, but it was not stated on the hang tag.We finished it using Minwax in a light oak.It looked very nice when fininshed. Now white patches are coming to the surface. We are wondering, what did we do wrong? Thanks in advance for your answers.
